Getting outside most weekends with gorgeous South African weather can be harder than you’d think. It’s not easy finding something different that doesn’t cost a fortune that you can sit back and enjoy.
Located on the R44 between Stellenbosch and Somerset west, roughly 45 minutes from Cape Town. Root 44 market has filled this void for boring sit at home weekends, by being easily accessible with parking, no entrance fees and being able to do your own thing. The market is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 09:00 am no matter the weather.
Being able to bring your own picnic if you so wish, enjoy some live music for the day or for those with a bit of temptation to experience more there is loads to do. From everyday favourite foods made on the spot like hamburgers, pizza’s and salads to more adventurous cuisine like curries, Chinese and other things you might never have known existed. Being able to grab your food of choice and a wide variety of beverages too from craft beers, local wines and fresh juices there is no reason to sit at an empty table, it’s easy to have a good time with friends and family listening to live music.
There are also many crafts to peruse through from functional handmade furniture, art décor and even gifts, there is an abundance of choice for any gender, age and hobbyists. Some of my favourite stores include fresh juices, spring rolls and taking a walk to look at the plant section with local succulent plants and great inspiration to take home, the art section made by the locals has vibrant colours and the wood section where they have all sort of unusual furniture.
The people at the stalls are very friendly and often extremely passionate about their food and crafts and how they’re made, wanting to share experiences and ideas. They enjoy what they are doing and come from fascinating backgrounds and often interesting to know how they got into what they do today.
The markets live entertainment changes every day, their website offers a preview of the upcoming gigs, and sometimes they have other events happening or a running theme, this year I am aware they are supporting Movember which is in November when men grow their moustaches in support of awareness for men’s health issues. This market supports this by trying to raise awareness and money for the charity.
The market has a child section where kids can play and when with their parents there are plenty of food and crafts venues that also have some child friendly foods and toys. It is also pet friendly and many have taken their dogs, however they need to be on leashes. I have on many occasions taken my cockatoo ‘Buttons’ to the market, though she is also kept on a harness.
When the day is over and its time to head off, don’t forget to pick up some local produce that have been home made like condiments, tasty baked treats and meats for the home.
